Romance Scam Costs Woman $400K in Crypto & Casino Fraud

The crushing story of internet romance fraud is becoming increasingly evident as a woman loses close to $400,000 in a well-staged scam.

In what started as innocent chats on Facebook, a lonely mother newly separated found herself emotionally invested in a younger man who said he worked for a global IT firm. The man informed her that he was abroad working on installing new betting systems for a casino and said he had found a “glitch” that would allow wins during a certain 30-minute window every night.

Through emotional manipulation and trust-gaining dialogue, the con artist convinced the woman to bet for him and subsequently deposit her funds in cryptocurrency (USDT) and in cash through ATMs — to “maximize bonuses” and “guaranteed returns.”

Despite repeated warnings from her family, the woman continued to trust the scammer, swayed by his constant updates and emotional involvement. The fake platform subsequently said the money was “frozen” for tax reasons, requesting additional cash for release — a typical technique employed in advance-fee scams.

The counterfeit gambling website, recently registered and fraudulently portrayed as an “underground” branch of a real casino, is being investigated. The case highlights the lethal mixture of emotional susceptibility and financial abuse on the internet.
